Whitney and the rest of us

As I watched the homegoing services for Whitney Houston today, I came to remember and appreciate how alike we all are. We all have lessons to teach and lessons to learn, and we all have gifts to share. We are so fragile and life is so fleeting. I’m not a celebrity. I’m nobody famous. I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m just making it up as I go along. But as I walk through this world I know my steps are divinely ordered. I don’t know much academically, about music. I am not formally trained. Before this current musical journey I only sang in the fifth grade glee club. But I’ve witnessed the joy in people’s faces when I sing. I’ve seen the tears when I sing a sad song. I’ve seen the spontaneous dancing when I sing a boot scootin’ song. I’ve seen Alzheimer’s patients remember words and sing along when they have forgotten how to feed themselves. And in those moments I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, what my gift is. This ministry of music God has given me is my greatest joy and I am supremely blessed.

So I say to you, whether you are on top of the world or in the valleys of life, remember your gift, share your gift and soldier on.
